As part of World Environment Day, World Oceans Day and March for the Oceans in June, not-for-profit marine conservation organisation, Azraq with will be screening the documentary; Straws at The Junction in Alserkal Avenue for the FIRST TIME EVER in the United Arab Emirates. Reserve your spot here.
Sparked by research that plastic straws are now among the top-five beach litter item collected, STRAWS outlines how billions of non-recyclable plastic straws litter streets and wash into oceans.
Please note that this event is for Azraq members. Not a member? Event membership is available from 50 AED per person and can be easily arranged.
The film opens with an animated sequence narrated by Oscar- winner Tim Robbins charting the history of straws. It then explores the modern dilemma of these one-time use products as millions are produced to satisfy a wholly artificial demand.
Important questions are raised regarding the use of plastic in straw production, and several environmental scientists lay out how these seemingly innocuous items will end up doing irreversible harm to marine life, the ocean, and eventually human health if the problem continues to build. Sea turtles and other marine animals are frequent victims as they often consume plastics or get caught in bags and nets. The marine biology researchers in Costa Rica who found a straw lodged inside the nose of an Olive Ridley sea turtle, recount their tale over footage of their viral video.
Alongside scenes of beach clean-ups, STRAWS provides alternate, sustainable solutions such as paper, bamboo, or metal straws -- which have cut down costs for local businesses - - and encourages the simple act of refusing a straw when at a restaurant. Empowering tales, from local business owners who have changed their ordering model to middle schoolers who have enacted challenges in their communities, highlight how anyone can take action to help save the world's oceans.
The screening is 33mins long and will be followed by a panel discussion hosted by radio personality Emma Brain with CEO of Freedom Pizza, Ian Ohan, General Manager of Jumeriah Restaurant Group, Emma Banks and Managing Director of Azraq, Natalie Banks.
We would like to thank our Gold Sponsor Liquid of Life and our Silver Sponsors Retold and Bags of the Future for their support in helping us make this event possible.
