Through the HAMIA Initiative, AZRAQ is proud to lead the “Million Mangrove Challenge”, an ambitious project aimed at restoring and expanding vital mangrove forests across the UAE. By reforesting coastal habitats, this initiative not only protects biodiversity but also creates a natural buffer against coastal erosion and rising sea levels, ensuring the resilience of our communities.
Mangroves are powerful carbon sinks, absorbing carbon from the atmosphere and storing it within their roots and surrounding soil, making them key players in the fight against climate change. By 2030, AZRAQ aims to plant one million mangroves, engaging communities and partners to regenerate these unique ecosystems and create a sustainable, greener future for generations to come.
Through the AMAL initiative, AZRAQ is dedicated to raising awareness about the vital importance of coral reef ecosystems and achieving long-term restoration. Our mission focuses on reducing human impact, surveying and monitoring UAE reefs, and expanding marine ecosystems along the UAE coastline using artificial reef techniques.
In partnership with Coralife, we are committed to protecting and enhancing marine biodiversity by creating sustainable artificial reef structures. By 2030, AZRAQ aims to restore 60,000 corals across the UAE, safeguarding these essential habitats and ensuring their resilience for future generations.
The Taher Initiative is dedicated to tackling the growing crisis of marine debris through comprehensive clean-up efforts, community education on proper waste management, and the promotion of sustainable practices to prevent future pollution. Marine debris poses severe threats to marine life, causing injuries or fatalities through drowning, entanglement, and starvation from ingestion. Innocent creatures like birds, sharks, turtles, dolphins, and whales are particularly vulnerable.
With alarming predictions from the World Economic Forum that by 2050 there could be more plastic than fish in the ocean, urgent action is critical. AZRAQ’s goal for 2030 is to conduct 100 Coastal Debris Cleanups across the UAE, uniting communities to protect our marine ecosystems and ensure cleaner, healthier oceans for future generations.
The INMA Initiative prioritizes education as the cornerstone of AZRAQ’s conservation efforts. We believe that well-informed individuals are better equipped to understand the significance of marine ecosystems and the challenges they face. Our educational programs provide valuable insights into the delicate balance of marine life and the critical environmental issues threatening our oceans.
By 2030, AZRAQ aims to deliver 150 lectures and seminars across communities, schools, and organizations, empowering individuals with the knowledge needed to protect our oceans and inspire lasting environmental stewardship.
